Piano and Rain overlays gentle piano with a rainfall sound bed, using the water layer as a masking, cocooning, and sleep-supporting texture. The musical side is usually simple and legato, because the rain already provides the continuous motion.

History

This hybrid began as a CD-era relaxation trope but became a major playlist and app format in the streaming age, especially for sleep, study, and stress reduction; while many releases are functional overlays of pre-existing calm piano language, artists such as Chad Lawson, Yiruma, Helen Jane Long, David Lanz, Liz Story, and Bernward Koch map well onto the style’s melodic-soft center.
