History

It descends from the singer-pianist tradition that linked adult pop to Broadway and standards, but it became a discrete AC current when Elton John and Billy Joel made piano-centered songwriting a mass-radio language and later artists translated that approach for late-1990s and early-2000s adult radio; Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Carlton, Five for Fighting, and Norah Jones each refreshed the form by pairing piano intimacy with confessional writing, pop clarity, or jazz-inflected restraint.
