Peaceful new age draws on the melodic-piano tradition of Windham Hill (George Winston, Liz Story) and the bright lyricism of Narada pianists like David Lanz and Kevin Kern, whose accessible, calming instrumentals dominated new-age radio and gift retail in the late 1980s and 1990s. Enya's serene productions and Norway's Secret Garden added lush, tranquil texture. The style became a mainstay of relaxation compilations and, in the streaming era, of "peaceful piano" and "calm instrumental" playlists, keeping the softest, prettiest side of new age continuously in circulation.
