Outrun is fast-driving synthwave: pulsing bass, arpeggiated leads, gated drums, neon-road imagery, and an imagined 1980s sports-car future. It is more propulsive than dreamwave and more aerodynamic than horror synth. The style often sounds like a lost racing-game menu, chase scene, or night-drive montage.
History
The name points back to Sega's 1986 arcade game Out Run and became fused with synthwave through Kavinsky, Drive, and the visual culture around cars, chrome, palm trees, and neon grids. Kavinsky, Miami Nights 1984, Lazerhawk, Mitch Murder, Power Glove, Mega Drive, Waveshaper, Robert Parker, Timecop1983, FM Attack, Highway Superstar, Starcadian, and Lost Years gave the lane its core vocabulary. The sound became a shorthand for retro speed across YouTube mixes, indie games, film trailers, and NewRetroWave-era compilations.
