Outlaw Country Rock
tagStarted 1972Peak 1974–1982Last big hit still active
Outlaw country rock intensifies outlaw country with rock rhythm and guitar force: tougher backbeats, more overdrive, larger stage energy, and a heavier sense of personal will. It keeps country storytelling but roughens the edges until the songs feel less "performed" than "declared."
History
Waylon Jennings is the central reference point, but the lane extends through Willie Nelson at his harder-rocking moments, Steve Earle, Hank Williams Jr., Shooter Jennings, and later independent hard-country rockers. It fed both southern rock and modern country-rock currents while keeping anti-establishment posture central.
