Orchestral art-rap uses strings, low brass, layered choirs, and carefully arranged dynamics to frame highly authored rap albums or songs. It aims for emotional and structural grandeur rather than mere beat bombast.

History

The lane became especially visible as auteur rap projects adopted score-like arrangements to underline narrative seriousness. Kanye West, Little Simz, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica, Tyler, the Creator, and Rapsody each approached it differently, but all used orchestral scale to elevate rap's album-form ambitions.
