Opera Seria is serious Italian opera of the Baroque and Classical eras, usually built around noble characters, ancient history, myth, moral conflict, and virtuosic solo arias. The sound alternates recitative-driven plot with da capo arias that showcase long breath, ornament, coloratura, heroic rage, lament, and vocal aristocracy, historically often centered on castrato star roles.

History

The genre crystallized in late-17th- and early-18th-century Italy and spread across European courts through librettists such as Metastasio and composers including Alessandro Scarlatti, Handel, Hasse, Vivaldi, Porpora, Gluck, and Mozart. Reform opera challenged its rigid aria-recitative alternation, but opera seria's vocal virtuosity, mythic dramaturgy, and star system shaped later bel canto, historically informed Baroque performance, and modern countertenor and mezzo-soprano repertory.
