Old-Time / Appalachian / Folk Country
The foundational acoustic stratum of country music, built on fiddle and banjo dance tunes, unaccompanied and harmony ballad singing, and the parlor-and-porch song traditions of the Southern Appalachians and rural America. Tempos range from droning modal fiddle breakdowns to slow, mournful ballads, with instrumentation centered on clawhammer banjo, fiddle, flat-picked and Carter-style guitar, mandolin, autoharp, and dulcimer. Vocals favor a high, lonesome, often nasal delivery, close family harmonies, and an unpolished directness rooted in oral tradition rather than commercial polish.
History
This family descends from the music that British, Scots-Irish, and African American settlers carried into the Appalachian and Ozark highlands, where ballads from the Child collection, Anglo-Celtic fiddle tunes, and the banjo (an instrument of African origin) fused over generations of front-porch and community music-making. It moved from purely oral tradition into commercial recording in the mid-1920s: Fiddlin' John Carson's 1923 Atlanta sides, the 1925 launch of the WSM Barn Dance (soon the Grand Ole Opry), and above all Ralph Peer's 1927 Bristol Sessions, which captured The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers and are remembered as the "Big Bang of country music." Through the 1920s and 1930s, string bands like Gid Tanner's Skillet Lickers and Charlie Poole's North Carolina Ramblers, plus singers like Uncle Dave Macon and Dock Boggs, defined a recorded old-time idiom.
