Phonk that fetishizes the cassette itself: wow-and-flutter pitch drift, heavy tape hiss, VHS-warble vocal chops and deliberately muffled, low-bitrate drums. Slow-to-mid tempo, murky and nostalgic, it sounds like a third-generation dub of a 90s mixtape. Less about aggression than atmosphere — a hazy, decayed, deeply lo-fi take on the Memphis blueprint.

History

Emerging from mid-2010s SoundCloud's 'rare phonk' wing, producers such as Soudiere, DJ Yung Vamp and Mythic leaned into analog degradation — running beats through tape machines and codec artifacts. The look-and-sound paired with retro VHS visuals on YouTube, cementing cassette grit as an aesthetic value rather than a recording limitation.
