History
Born from Bronx block parties and the first wave of commercial rap singles after Sugarhill Gang's 1979 breakthrough. Sugar Hill and Enjoy Records pressed live-band and disco-loop rap to vinyl, codifying the MC-over-breakbeat formula before sampling, before albums, and before lyricism turned dense. It set the template every later era reacted against.
