Oi! is blunt, terrace-chant punk built from mid-tempo riffs, shouted hooks, gang vocals and lyrics about working-class life, local pride, youth identity, street conflict and everyday frustration. Compared with first-wave punk, it is less arty and more communal; compared with hardcore, it is usually slower and more chant-driven. Its best records feel like a crowd singing with the band, not an audience watching from a distance.
History
The name was popularized by journalist Garry Bushell and compilations such as Oi! The Album, but the sound drew from Sham 69, Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts and early street punk. The 4-Skins, The Business, Blitz and The Last Resort codified the style in the early 1980s. Oi!'s reputation became tangled with skinhead politics and tabloid panic, yet the core musical vocabulary continued globally through anti-racist, apolitical and nationalist scenes alike, making context essential.
