Vintage-toned heavy rock steeped in witchcraft, Satanic theatre and horror-film dread: warm fuzzed riffs, swirling Hammond organ and flute, and haunting, often female-led vocals wrapped in 1970s analog warmth. Less crushing than doom, it leans melodic and ritualistic — seance-mood balladry and minor-key occult anthems dripping with the macabre.
History
Pioneered in 1969 by Chicago's Coven (first band to record a Black Mass) and the UK's Black Widow, occult rock predated Black Sabbath's imagery. After decades dormant it surged in a late-2000s revival led by Toronto's Blood Ceremony and Finland's Jess and the Ancient Ones, with The Devil's Blood and Johanna Sadonis's Lucifer cementing a witchy, organ-laced, female-fronted template.
