Oboe Concerto

Oboe concerto sound is piercing yet lyrical: nasal, reedy, intensely vocal, and deeply expressive in slow movements. The genre thrives on cantabile line, elegant ornament, phrase tapering, pastoral associations, and the friction between the oboe’s plaintive voice and the smoother blend of strings or light orchestra.

History

The oboe was one of the first wind instruments to become a prominent concerto soloist, especially in Italian Baroque repertory by Albinoni, Marcello, and Vivaldi. Mozart gave the instrument one of its central Classical statements, while Strauss, Vaughan Williams, Martinu, and later composers refreshed the repertory in the 20th century.
