Nu-Disco Soul revives disco and boogie through modern soul production: four-on-the-floor or post-disco drums, glossy bass lines, rhythm guitar, strings or synth strings, falsetto hooks, chic harmonies and house-aware mixing. It is warmer and more vocal than much club nu-disco, but sleeker and more dance-oriented than retro soul. The sound imagines disco not as costume, but as a usable language for contemporary joy.
History
Disco revival currents ran through house, French touch, broken beat and 2000s nu-disco, then mainstream artists brought soul-disco textures back through Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Pharrell, Jessie Ware, Roisin Murphy, Dua Lipa, Silk Sonic, Kylie Minogue and Beyonce. Indie and dance producers also revived boogie bass and live strings. Nu-disco soul thrives because disco's communal release feels fresh whenever pop becomes too brittle or isolated.
