Nu-Disco is the modern revival and redesign of disco for contemporary clubs: cleaner drums, synth bass, edit culture, Italo and boogie references, and a slower, sleeker feel than peak-time house. It can be songful, instrumental, Balearic, indie-dance, or pop-facing, but it usually treats disco as living material rather than costume nostalgia. The style often prefers patient grooves, glossy synths, and lovingly extended arrangements over the maximal drop logic of festival EDM.
History
Nu-disco grew through early-2000s edit labels, DFA's punk-funk/disco revival, Scandinavian cosmic disco, and producers who wanted dance music to reconnect with live groove and old records. Metro Area, Lindstrøm, Prins Thomas, Hercules & Love Affair, Todd Terje, Aeroplane, Tensnake, and later Purple Disco Machine all helped define different sides of the sound. Todd Terje's "Inspector Norse" became a flagship modern instrumental, while pop artists pulled nu-disco polish into mainstream albums.
