History
Crystallized by Bobby "Boris" Pickett's 1962 chart-topper "Monster Mash," novelty rock thrived on early-60s radio and the mid-60s with Napoleon XIV's "They're Coming to Take Me Away." Dr. Demento's syndicated show from 1970 preserved the form for decades, keeping seasonal and gimmick singles in regular rotation long after their chart heyday.
