Novelty Pop

tagStarted 1958Peak 1960s-1970sLast big hit still active

The gimmick-record core: a single absurd premise wrapped in a sugary, instantly hummable pop hook. Sped-up chipmunk voices, animal sounds, dance fads and silly subjects sit over clean period-pop arrangements. The point is the catchphrase chorus, repeated until it lodges. Bright, broad, deliberately ridiculous and built for radio request lines.

History

Crystallized when Ross Bagdasarian's pitch-shifted Chipmunks topped charts in 1958, then Bobby Pickett's monster-mash and Brian Hyland's bikini gag proved a daft hook could go No. 1. Dr. Demento's syndicated radio show became the genre's clearinghouse from 1970, preserving and feeding novelty's chart appearances for decades.
