Nordic folk draws on regional fiddle dialects, hardanger fiddle, nyckelharpa, frame drum, vocal kulning or joik-adjacent practices, and modal melodies that often hover between dance-floor function and cold-air trance. Its dance tunes can be springy and crooked rather than square, and its vocal music often sounds like landscape with lungs.

History

Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Sápmi preserve overlapping but distinct local traditions, many of which were standardized or archived in nationalist and collector projects before entering strong late-20th-century revival circuits. A new generation of bands and singer-instrumentalists embraced original composition, folk-rock, and chamber-folk arrangements without sacrificing modal character or regional dance roots.
