Where hardcore's aggression meets noise rock's ugliness: detuned, atonal guitars scraping over churning low-end, pounding tribal drums and unhinged, throat-shredding vocals. Feedback, dissonance and grinding repetition replace clean riffing; the result is abrasive, sludgy and menacing, prizing sheer caustic texture over melody or technique.

History

Grew at the late-1980s and 1990s intersection of hardcore and the AmRep/Touch and Go noise-rock scenes. New York's Unsane brought bloody, blues-scarred grind; Nashville's Today Is the Day pushed manic, schizoid extremity. Drive Like Jehu's angular post-hardcore fed the sound, which later informed sludge, metalcore and noise-leaning heavy bands.
