Cinematic dark rock scored like a film-noir crime picture: brushed drums, upright bass, mournful strings, vibraphone and twanged tremolo guitar under murmured, gin-soaked baritone narration. Tempos crawl; menace simmers beneath velvet. Lyrics trade in murder ballads, doomed romance and smoky after-hours dread, all atmosphere, restraint and shadow.
History
Emerged as artists pushed gothic and post-punk toward orchestral, slow-burn storytelling. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds set the template with murder ballads and 'Red Right Hand'; Nottingham's Tindersticks built chamber-noir from strings and croon. Marc Almond's torch leanings and Germany's doom-jazz Bohren & der Club of Gore widened it into a cinematic, genre-blurring strain.
