Existing pop accelerated 20-35% and pitch-shifted up, yielding breathless tempo, chipmunk-bright vocals and a euphoric, restless lift. Originally trance edits with anime art, the pop strain treats sped-up familiarity as the hook, anime-thumbnail YouTube culture and, later, TikTok 'sped up' versions defining its glittering, hyper-caffeinated feel.
History
Coined in 2002 by Norwegian duo DJ TNT and DJ SOS as a school project speeding trance to 45rpm, nightcore spread via LimeWire and YouTube from 2003-2006, fused to anime fandom. Through the 2010s fans nightcored pop and rap; it surged again in the early 2020s as TikTok 'sped up' edits pushed labels to release official accelerated versions.
