Nightcore is sped-up, pitch-shifted dance-pop, trance, Eurodance, happy hardcore, and pop music, usually paired with anime visuals and high-energy online sharing. The classic move is simple: raise speed and pitch until the vocal becomes brighter, younger, and more euphoric. The style can sound naive, but its influence is serious: it taught internet listeners to treat tempo, pitch, and unofficial remixing as emotional tools, long before labels started releasing official sped-up versions for TikTok.
History
The name comes from Norwegian duo Nightcore, who began making sped-up trance and Eurodance versions in the early 2000s; their "Dam Dadi Doo" became a template once files circulated through LimeWire and YouTube. YouTube uploaders and AMV communities expanded the style with Cascada, Basshunter, S3RL, ItaloBrothers, DJ Splash, Caramell, Getter Jaani, The Cab, Meg & Dia, NightcoreReality, and countless uncredited edits. Hyperpop, digicore, and TikTok sped-up pop all inherited parts of nightcore's high-pitched, compressed emotional language.
