History

Defined by Run-DMC's self-titled 1984 debut and Def Jam's early roster, the New School stripped rap to drum machine and voice, shortening tracks and hardening the attitude. It bridged the party-era foundations and the Golden Age's sample-collage maximalism, professionalizing rap as albums-and-MTV music.
