New Romantic Lounge is the smooth, glamorous lounge-facing edge of New Romantic pop: elegant synths, fretless bass, saxophone, clean guitar, romantic baritone vocals, drum machines, and theatrical but restrained atmosphere. Tempos range from slow 60 BPM torch-pop to 115 BPM mid-tempo new wave, with style and mood as important as rhythm. It is nightclub pop after the costumes have left the dance floor and ordered something expensive.
History
The sub-style grew from the London/Birmingham New Romantic scene, Roxy Music's influence, synth-pop polish, and the moment when MTV-era image collided with adult-pop smoothness. Spandau Ballet, Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music, ABC, Japan, Duran Duran, Culture Club, China Crisis, and Visage each contributed records where new-wave glamour softened into lounge, soul, or art-pop elegance. New Romantic Lounge fed sophisti-pop, new pop balladry, wine-bar nostalgia, and later retro playlists focused on 1980s style rather than synth-pop maximalism.
