Witty, hyper-literate alt-rock about awkwardness, obsession, and ordinary frustration, sung in deadpan everyman voices. Tight power-pop hooks, clever wordplay, accordion or synth quirks, and self-deprecating narrators define it. The humor is intelligent and observational rather than gross-out or gimmick-driven.

History

They Might Be Giants pioneered the brainy, whimsical mode in the late 1980s, with 1990's "Flood" pushing it toward the mainstream. Barenaked Ladies and Fountains of Wayne carried the witty everyman strain into 1990s alt-radio, and Harvey Danger's 1998 hit "Flagpole Sitta" gave the self-aware-loser archetype a defining anthem.
