History
Neo-soul gospel emerged in the 2010s as a generation raised on neo-soul and hip-hop brought that palette to Christian music, led by Jonathan McReynolds, whose acoustic-soul songwriting and honest lyrics reframed gospel for millennials, and Mali Music, who crossed between gospel and R&B. The Walls Group added youthful harmony-group soul, Travis Greene blended neo-soul textures with worship, and Kirk Franklin's later production embraced the sound. Nurtured on YouTube, streaming and independent releases, neo-soul gospel became a critically respected lane that expanded gospel's sonic range and its appeal to secular-leaning listeners.
