Neo-Crust

Neo-Crust is crust punk made more melodic, dramatic and expansive: dark guitar harmonies, urgent D-beat, emotional screaming, long crescendos and a sense of tragedy that can feel almost post-rock without losing punk force. It keeps crust's politics and bleakness but adds more atmosphere, dynamics and carefully shaped songs. Compared with old crust, it is less filthy and more cinematic; compared with screamo, it is heavier and more apocalyptic.
History
His Hero Is Gone and Tragedy formed the key bridge from 1990s crust and hardcore into a darker, more melodic language. From Ashes Rise, Remains of the Day, Fall of Efrafa, Ekkaia, Madame Germen, Alpinist and Masakari spread the style through DIY international scenes. Neo-crust overlapped with dark hardcore, screamo, post-metal and blackened crust, giving political punk a sound that could be mournful, huge and still fiercely direct.
