Neo-Bluegrass Country

Neo-bluegrass country injects bluegrass instruments or phrasing—mandolin, acoustic flatpicking, high harmonies, banjo or dobro texture—into accessible country songwriting and radio-form structure. It is brisker and more acoustic-forward than most neotraditional country, but usually less purely virtuosic than straight bluegrass.

History

Ricky Skaggs's early-1980s success was pivotal, proving that bluegrass-rooted musicianship could sell within mainstream country. The lane also runs through acts such as The Judds, Patty Loveless, Alison Krauss and Union Station at the country edge, and later roots-country artists who used bluegrass texture without leaving the country-song frame.
