Character-driven rock that leans cinematic and dramatic, often stringing scenes into a suite or a story-cycle. Bigger than plain story rock - layered band arrangements, key changes, recurring motifs, sometimes multiple narrators within one track. Vocals act, shifting register between characters. The writing prizes a vivid cast and a sense of place over a confessional 'I.'
History
Bruce Springsteen's 'Thunder Road' and 'Jungleland' (1975) showed how a single song could hold a whole movie of characters; Billy Joel's three-part 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant' (1977) and Bob Seger's small-town vignettes pushed the multi-scene approach. The form rewarded writers who could build a recurring world across an album.
