Narrative Country

Narrative country is broader than the "story song" hit format, covering any country music built around sequence, characters, and unfolding events. It often uses direct language, sturdy melody, and auditory scene painting—town names, weather, occupations, motives, consequences.
History
From Appalachian ballads to cowboy songs, cheating songs, outlaw songs, and modern literary country, narrative has always been central to the genre. In the commercial era, artists like Marty Robbins, Tom T. Hall, Johnny Cash, and later writers such as Prine and Isbell turned country into one of America's strongest popular-song storytelling traditions.
