Musical theatre lounge recasts stage songs in a smaller, more urbane setting, often with piano trio, jazz guitar, or cocktail rhythm instead of full pit-orchestra weight. The songs remain theatrical in lyric and shape, but the performance becomes intimate, rueful, and club-smart rather than stage-belted.
History
New York cabaret rooms and pianist-singer traditions encouraged performers to reinterpret Broadway material as supper-club repertory, with Bobby Short, Blossom Dearie, Barbara Carroll, Steve Ross, Jessica Molaskey, and John Pizzarelli all showing how theatre songs could live comfortably in jazz-club proportions without losing dramatic content.
