Screen scoring built on modular and semi-modular synthesizers — patchable systems (Moog, Buchla, Serge, Eurorack) where oscillators, filters and sequencers are wired by hand to generate evolving, unrepeatable textures. The sound is organic yet electronic: burbling sequences, self-generating drones, unstable pitch, random-voltage flickers and richly overtonal timbres that breathe and mutate across a cue. Composers exploit the instrument's tendency toward chance and slow evolution, treating patching as sound design and drama rather than melody-first writing. The mood is often uncanny, immersive and slightly alien.

History

Modular scoring begins with Wendy Carlos's Moog realizations (A Clockwork Orange, 1971) and the West Coast experiments of Suzanne Ciani, alongside Tangerine Dream's patched Moog and sequencer work of the 1970s. The Eurorack boom of the 2010s revived the approach for a new generation: Cliff Martinez's Cristal Baschet-and-modular scores, and above all Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow's analog-modular work for Alex Garland's Ex Machina (2015) and Annihilation (2018), which made unstable machine textures central to modern sci-fi unease. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's Buchla explorations and Steve Moore's analog synth horror scores extended the palette, establishing hands-on modular sound design as a prestige tool for atmosphere-driven cinema.
