Modern Soul-Blues

Modern Soul-Blues updates classic Southern blues-soul with cleaner contemporary production, thicker low end, and songs written for today’s blues circuit rather than 1960s pop radio. The singing stays churchy and mature, and the groove stays blues-based even when keyboards and arrangements sound newer.
History
As retro-soul and blues heritage markets expanded, singers and bandleaders found room to continue the soul-blues tradition outside mainstream pop. The Blues Foundation’s active soul-blues categories reflect how visible the lane remains, with artists like Bobby Rush, Johnny Rawls, Trudy Lynn, Thornetta Davis, Curtis Salgado, and others carrying the form into contemporary performance and recording culture.
