Modern Roots Blues is contemporary blues that looks backward without freezing in the past. It blends acoustic blues, electric roots, gospel, soul, folk, country, New Orleans rhythm, African-diasporic links and songwriter craft. Production is usually cleaner than archival revivalism, but the music still values groove, narrative, guitar touch and historical awareness. It is one of the main places blues keeps renewing itself for modern roots audiences.

History

After blues-rock and electric urban blues dominated many public images of the genre, artists in the 1990s and 2000s rebuilt acoustic and roots-facing lanes. Keb' Mo', Taj Mahal, Eric Bibb, Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Ruthie Foster, Shemekia Copeland and Fantastic Negrito each connected older blues with contemporary songwriting and broader roots scenes. Awards, festivals and Americana media helped make the lane visible.
