Contemporary hard rock built for 21st-century rock radio: tightly compressed, drop-tuned guitars, click-tight drums, and soaring, often vulnerable belted choruses. Polished, anthemic, and dynamic — quiet verses snapping into wall-of-distortion hooks. Heavier and glossier than its forebears, engineered for active-rock playlists and arenas.
History
Coalesced after grunge faded, as bands fused post-grunge weight with cleaner studio sheen for the active-rock format of the 2000s. Shinedown, Halestorm, and Three Days Grace built careers atop the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, where the style still dominates. It is hard rock's current commercial mainstream — riff-driven but radio-engineered.
