Modern Electro is post-1990s electro that treats old-school machine funk as a living underground language rather than a nostalgia object. It keeps 808 syncopation, bass science, vocoders, and sci-fi hooks, but adds cleaner club engineering, darker atmospheres, techno pressure, acid lines, and global labels/scenes. The music often works for both dance floors and headphone sci-fi worldbuilding.
History
The modern wave grew from Detroit electro revival, Drexciya mythology, European electro labels, IDM-adjacent machine music, and producers who rejected both commercial EDM and retro pastiche. Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, Aux 88, Anthony Rother, DMX Krew, Carl Finlow, Umwelt, Jensen Interceptor, DJ Stingray, Sync 24, Radioactive Man, Helena Hauff, The Exaltics, and Ceephax Acid Crew all connect to the continuing canon. The 2010s vinyl revival and club interest in faster electro made the style newly visible.
