The minuet is an elegant triple-meter dance defined by moderate tempo, balanced phrase structure, and social polish rather than sweeping momentum. In classical music it became both a literal dance and a stylized middle movement type, often projecting grace, poise, and orderly proportion.
History
Originating in French court culture under Louis XIV, the minuet spread through Europe and became a core dance of aristocratic life, then entered suites, serenades, symphonies, quartets, and sonatas as one of the great formal markers of the Classical era; even when replaced by the scherzo in many contexts, its elegance remained a reference point for later composers.
