Producers like Metro Boomin, 808 Mafia and Pi'erre Bourne refined trap into spare, eerie minimalism in the mid-2010s. 21 Savage and Metro's Savage Mode (2016) epitomized the cold, hollow aesthetic; Playboi Carti's repetitive, beat-forward minimalism extended it, making restraint and space a defining trap mode through the late 2010s.
