Rock stripped to repeating cells and patient accumulation, borrowing the phasing and gradual-process logic of minimalist composers. Hypnotic, looping guitar and motorik or steady drums shift almost imperceptibly over long durations. Tension comes from repetition and subtle change rather than riffs or choruses—the slow build of a single idea worked obsessively.
History
Drew on Steve Reich's and Terry Riley's pattern music funneled through Krautrock motorik. Chicago's Tortoise (formed 1990) and the post-rock/Thrill Jockey axis applied looping, vibraphone-laced minimalism to rock instrumentation; Stereolab's repetition and Trans Am's motorik pulse spread the hypnotic, additive approach through the 90s and 2000s.
