Minimal Synth Pop

tagStarted 1979Peak 1981-1984, 2007-2014Last big hit still active

Austere, stripped-back electronic pop built from a handful of analog synths and a primitive drum machine. Sparse repetitive sequences, cold monophonic basslines, and deadpan or detached vocals define a deliberately lo-fi, DIY aesthetic. Hypnotic and skeletal, it prizes restraint, hiss, and machine repetition over polish.

History

Rooted in early-80s European cassette-culture and cold-wave acts working with cheap gear and four-track recorders. The Minimal Wave reissue label revived interest from 2007 onward, and a Brooklyn-centered scene led by Xeno & Oaklander and Sean McBride's Martial Canterel built a thriving contemporary minimal-synth revival.
