History
Seeded by Eno and other early ambient minimalists, the style matured when artists began treating restraint itself as the principal aesthetic. Japanese environmental music, Budd’s pared-down lyricism, Loscil’s compressed structural elegance, Deuter’s silence-weighted instrumentals, and the glacial patience of Stars of the Lid all showed that ambient power often increases as content decreases, provided tone and pacing are exquisite.
