Hard-working, no-frills rock from the industrial heartland: Detroit, Flint, Cleveland, Indiana. Muscular rhythm sections, riffy guitars, organ, and a populist directness that mirrors factory-town life. Less mythic than the Jersey strain, more meat-and-potatoes punch, the sound of a people's band that just wants to rock for the regular crowd.

History

Took shape in Michigan and Ohio from the late 1960s, as Detroit and Flint bands built a hard-driving, industrial rock tied to working audiences. Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railroad, and Cleveland's Michael Stanley Band defined a regional FM identity through the '70s and '80s; Mellencamp carried the Indiana variant, keeping the Midwest's plainspoken rock alive.
