Micro-Indie is small-scale, internet-circulated indie music whose identity comes from tiny scenes, micro-labels, playlist niches, Bandcamp pages, Discord communities, and hyper-specific aesthetics rather than traditional radio or press machinery. The sound often overlaps with bedroom pop, lo-fi rock, soft synth-pop, cassette folk, and gentle guitar indie, with short songs, modest mixes, close vocals, and highly personal branding. It is indie after the gatekeepers got replaced by a thousand side doors.
History
The roots lie in cassette culture, DIY labels, college radio, and 1990s lo-fi, but Micro-Indie as a recognizable contemporary condition formed when Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Tumblr, YouTube, Spotify playlists, TikTok, and direct-to-fan tools allowed very small artists to build meaningful audiences without conventional scenes. Orchid Tapes, Double Double Whammy, Run for Cover's indie wing, Father/Daughter, Bayonet, and countless local or online micro-labels helped frame a generation of acts such as Alex G, Frankie Cosmos, Florist, Lomelda, Hovvdy, Horse Jumper of Love, Jay Som, and Squirrel Flower. The sub-genre's influence is structural as much as musical: it normalized modest reach, fan intimacy, and scene identity built at internet scale.
