Hardcore welded to extreme metal: chugging palm-muted riffs and Gothenburg-style melodic-death leads colliding with crushing two-step breakdowns. Vocals trade guttural screams for soaring clean choruses in the melodic strain. Built around the breakdown as climax, with double-kick drumming and tight, downtuned precision.
History
Emerged in the early-to-mid 1990s as "metallic hardcore" bands like Integrity and Earth Crisis bolted metal heft to hardcore's mosh sensibility on Victory Records. In the 2000s Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and All That Remains layered in melodic-death riffing and clean choruses, pushing metalcore onto Ozzfest stages, the Billboard charts and a 2005 Grammy nomination.
