Lo-fi, menacing Memphis sound built on the Roland TR-808, distorted bass, eerie minor-key synth stabs, and triplet-driven, chant-heavy flows. Self-distributed on cassette, it favors murky mixes, double-time hi-hats, and group call-outs. Three 6 Mafia turned the underground tape aesthetic into platinum-selling Southern menace.
History
Emerging from early-'90s Memphis cassette culture and DJ Spanish Fly's pause-tape mixes, the scene coalesced around DJ Paul and Juicy J, who formed Three 6 Mafia around 1994. Their 1995 'Mystic Stylez' codified the lo-fi, horror-tinged template. Hypnotize Minds spread the sound nationally, and decades later the same tapes fueled the phonk revival.
