The darkest strain of Memphis tape rap: satanic and horror-film imagery, blood-curdling vocal samples, demonic pitched-down vocals, and grimy, distorted 808 production drenched in reverb and tape hiss. Lyrics dwell on murder, torture, the occult, and dread, delivered in chanted triplet cadences over funeral-paced menace.
History
Rooted in early-'90s Memphis cassette culture, the horror strain ran parallel to mainstream Memphis rap through artists like Tommy Wright III, Lord Infamous, and Koopsta Knicca. Three 6 Mafia's 1995 'Mystic Stylez' brought occult horrorcore to vinyl. Long buried in tape trading, the sound was resurrected in the 2010s as a core source for phonk.
