Mathcore fuses hardcore, metalcore, noise rock and extreme metal with jagged time signatures, abrupt tempo changes, dissonant chords, panic-stop structures and technical drumming. It is chaotic but not random: the violence comes from precision, sudden pivots and riffs that seem to fold in on themselves. Vocals are usually screamed, while guitars act less like chordal support and more like impact geometry.
History
Early precursors include Rorschach, Deadguy, Coalesce and Converge, but the late-1990s explosion around Botch and The Dillinger Escape Plan made mathcore a recognized style. Labels such as Hydra Head, Relapse and Equal Vision helped circulate the sound, while bands like Norma Jean, Daughters and Car Bomb pushed it toward metalcore, noise rock or hyper-technical extremity. Mathcore influenced modern metalcore, technical hardcore, sass-adjacent screamo and experimental heavy music.
