Mandopop is Mandarin-language popular music spanning ballads, dance-pop, R&B, rock-pop, idol pop, singer-songwriter pop and soundtrack songs across Taiwan, mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia and the wider diaspora. Its center is melody and vocal personality: karaoke-ready choruses, emotional ballads, polished arrangements and songs built to travel through TV, film, streaming, talent shows and fan communities.
History
Shanghai shidaiqu and later Hong Kong/Taiwan industries helped establish Chinese-language pop, but modern Mandopop became especially powerful through Taiwan's recording and television ecosystem. Teresa Teng set a pan-Chinese ballad standard; Faye Wong, A-Mei, Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai, Stefanie Sun, Leehom Wang and Mayday expanded the field through R&B, rock, hip-hop, dance and singer-songwriter approaches. Streaming and mainland platforms now make Mandopop a huge multi-market ecosystem.
