Mall Emo / 2000s Emo
Located in 2 routes
Mall Emo / 2000s Emo is the glossy, dramatic, mass-visible emo wave: black eyeliner, arena choruses, diary-like lyrics, pop-punk tempos, post-hardcore tension and videos built around heartbreak, alienation and theatrical identity. It is less basement-bound than earlier emo and more image-conscious, but it kept the emotional overload that made the word matter. The sound is huge because the feelings are huge.
History
Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World opened commercial doors, then My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Paramore, Hawthorne Heights and The All-American Rejects turned emo-coded rock into a mid-2000s youth monoculture. MTV, Hot Topic, MySpace and Warped Tour made the scene visual as much as musical. Later reassessment treated many records less as guilty pleasures and more as durable pop-rock craft.
