Lyrical rap emphasizes density of thought, bar quality, and verbal seriousness rather than speed alone. The rapper is judged not just on rhymes but on how well ideas survive under them.

History

Nas, Black Thought, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Kendrick Lamar, and many peers represent the lane's prestige line. In practice it overlaps with conscious and technical rap, but "lyrical rap" specifically implies listeners are expected to come back for the bars.
